These linenbacked original covers and ads are not only a bright pop of GORGEOUS art for your wall, but true investments, unlike the cheap knock-offs. And unlike the other (unbacked) ones from other sellers these are chosen first for being in excellent condition, then linen-backed to make them more handleable, frameable and preserve that condition for years to come!
Born May 25, 1845 in Lausanne (Switzerland).
Died in 1917 in Sceaux (Hauts-de-Seine France),
Grasset was a Swiss-born French artist printmaker and poster designer, born to a father who was also a decorator and sculptor. He studied drawing with François Bocion and architecture at Polytechnic in Zurich in 1861.
At the end of his studies in 1866, he visited Egypt, a trip from which he drew much inspiration in his later works. An admiration and infatuation with Japanese art began soon after, also influencing many of his works.
In 1869 and 1870 he worked as a painter and sculptor for the decoration of the Lausanne theater, then moved to Paris in 1871 and worked as a designer for factory supplies, tapestries, jewelry and ceramics, where he quickly acquired a good reputation. In 1880 he designed a collection of furniture, now in the Gillot Museum of Decorative Arts. The collection includes a dining room suite of oak and carved walnut, decorated with fantastic animals and characters from popular art.
From 1877 he worked mainly in graphic picture books (The Quatre Fils Amon), Textiles (La Marseillaise), wallpapers, mosaics, stained glass (both religious and secular), lithographs and posters. He also designed postcards and stamps for the French and Swiss government administration.
In 1890, he created the logo of the Sower blowing a dandelion in the Larousse dictionary, which is on most of the Oxford brand publications from 1890 to 1952 and reappear in the 1970s.
Now famous, he was contacted by several American companies. In 1892 he made the cover of Harper's Magazine for Christmas and in 1894, he created advertising for The Century Magazine. He is the originator of Art Nouveau in the United States.
From 1890 to 1903 he taught at the School Guerin, and from 1905 to his death, at the Ecole Estienne in Paris. Among his pupils: Maurice Pillard Verneuil, Augusto Giacometti, Paul Berthon, Eliseu Visconti and Otto Ernst Schmidt.

This Original cover has been Archivally Linen-backed!
Linen-backing gives Original ephemera, prints, posters etc new life! They are cleaned, stabilized and restored; making them much more handleable, frameable and a more valuable asset to your collection.
Linen-backing is the practice of choice of top collectors and museums for conserving and maintaining the wonderful vintage ephemera, posters, and prints that otherwise would be lost due to their natural deterioration. Just like magazines, advertising posters, and periodicals of today, these wonderful graphics and images were, for the most part, not designed to last forever. They were, as the name implies, ephemeral! Linen-backing is a process whereby the print is carefully cleaned, and then mounted on acid free paper over linen, this is a reversible conservation process that stabilizes, consolidates, and preserves these collectible investments for decades perhaps even centuries to come.
Please see the pictures for best condition and description details. More photo's/scans can be emailed upon request. The digital watermark on the photos does not appear on the print itself.
