Gelett Burgess - Poem Signed For Sale

GELETT BURGESS
His poem "Interruption", signed with his name and a self-caricature
Poem signed: "Guy Burgess/[ crude drawing of a man's head]", 6x4. His 4-line poem "Interruption". Poet and humorist Frank Gelett Burgess (1866-1951) was obliged to resign from his teaching position (topographical drawing) at UC-Berkeley in 1894, after apparently toppling a temperance statue in San Francisco. He then founded a humorous magazine, The Lark (1895-1897), which published his own witty, short poems and works by other nonconformist writers. He coined the word "blurb," after using the pseudonym Belinda Blurb in a pithy quote praising his own book. He also wrote the "Goops" books for children. Burgess was married to actress and writer Estelle Loomis. Toned. Fine condition.
