GEORGEB. McCLELLAN

Engraved byR. Dudensing.

Beautifully engraved and surprisingly uncommon19th century engravedCivil War portraitprint. Set within an oval decorative border with a Civil War relatedvignette scene below the image.

The precise, detailed & nuancedengraving style epitomizes a particularly finevisual aesthetic quite unique to this moment in engraving and American history. Note the intricate elaborate ornate engraved border surrounding the central portrait. Technically difficult engraving technique and printing virtuosity on full display. A superior portrait to many others around it.

Because of these and various other factors, this printed leaf is an interesting original artifact from long past moment in printing.

**Important information forInternational Buyers**

  • You may be charged customs, taxes or other import duties by your country![this has nothing at all to do with us. Please do not hold us responsible if your Government wants to collect tax when you buy something outside of your country].

  • Import duties, taxes, and customs fees are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are normally collected by the shipping service when the package is delivered or when you pick the item up. They are the buyer\'s responsibility and are not additional shipping charges. [Please understand they have nothing to do with us and we have no control over them].

  • Please check with your country\'s customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to offerding or buying. [We do not know the various rules of your Customs office. There are a lot of countries in the world, most with complex detailed variable laws in languages we don\'t read. Plus these laws are constantly being changed & revised].

  • We won\'t under-value merchandise or mark the item as a gift on customs forms. Doing so is against US and International law! Please don\'t ask. Any requests to do this will be ignored. All orders are labeled as merchandise and described as a printed old/ antiquepaper item. [again, please do not ask us to mis-represent International mail parcels].

  • First Class Mail is the least expensive shipping option available and as such is the slowest. In addition to this we have seen longer delays in customs in recent months-- it can take as much as 6-8 weeks to arrive.

  • Please be patient once we ship Internationally--your package will arrive, but it may take time. You can\'t be in a rush to receive an item if you live outside the U.S.A. International mail is efficient & 99.9% accurate, but it is not typically fast.

  • If you would prefer to upgrade your shipping to faster Priority options we are happy to send you an invoice. Our experience tells us Priority International post is often slower than First Class. It\'s backwards, yes, and typically only makes sense if the parcel has value exceeding a certain level or extra security is desired. (it has nothing to do with us- it\'s just how the post officestreat parcels).

World Wide Flat Rate Shipping-

  • US Domestic Shipping-First Class mail-- $2.95 for first item + $1 each item after. Priority available starting at $4.95 first item, then typically $1 each therafter (unless heavy or huge).

  • Shipping to Canada-First Class mail-- $5.95 for first item + $3 for each item after. (so shipping 3 prints = $11.95, 10 prints =$32.95, etc.)

  • All other International Shipping- $5.95 for first item + $3 for each item after for First Class mail. (so shipping 3 prints = $11.95, 10 prints =$32.95, etc.)

Please note- this shipping cost is obviously less than our true cost. No matter how many items you buy, for sure it will cost us more than we are charging. If the check-out system charges you too much for what-ever reason, just bring it to our attention--- we\'ll happily work with you to refund when we ship your items.

Condition:

We only handle, sell& ship original vintage and antique items. Old sheets of paper, printed long ago. Items which are really old, like we say. Not modern copies or modern reproductions. It\'s amazing how many people still ask us if an item is truly old & genuine.

We strive to describe our items accurately. We understand you cannot see it in person. We are trying to present it accurately and convey condition correctly withcareful digital photography, accurate flat-bed scans of the item which are zoomable, precise printed sheet &image sizes and knowledgeable descriptive words.

It is important to understand & remember that many old printed paper items survive merely by chance, and all are somewhat unique if you inspect them closely. Few of the same typematch exactly if compared side-by-side. Each has it\'s own characteristics and patina- sometimes the differences are minor, other times quite noticable.

Individual pieces have typically seen numerous owners and been handled many times over the course of their existence. On old sheets of paper, short edge splits (which are often carefully repaired with discrete small pieces of archival tape), light foxing, minor age discoloration, etc. are all things to expect.It\'s often unrealistic to expect an old sheet of paper to survive looking like new or without flaws. The key to any printed sheet is the overall visual appeal of the piece. Oftensmallsigns of agedo not distract but rather they often add to the overall visualcharacter.

Keep in mind when you receive your item that you are not handling a modern copy, norsome clever modern reprint, or so on. You are holding a genuinepiece of printed graphic history,an old sheet of paperthat was printed long ago and will, with some basic proper care, be around for a long time yet to come. In the meantime, you can visually enjoy it in your portfolio, hang it on your wall, give it as a present, etc.

We really do tryto note anyvisually significant flaws in the description.Less noticeable, subtleor common minor age flaw characteristics may not be specifically mentioned, although often they are clearly visible within the zoomable scans or close-ups provided. Please look closely, do your research if needed, and ponder it before you click the buy-it button.

Virtually all old sheets of paper display some sort of visible age wear somewhere, and any attempt to capture every last one of them in words would just end in either mentalor physical grid-lock. Short minor closed edge splits, uneven blank side margins (of no significance 99% time), obvious narrow margins, light typical scattered age spotting, inoffensive light dampstaining in blank margins, etc. are all often not commented upon, as they are mostly not worthy of specific mention. Rather, their presence is reflected in the overall grade of the item, which carries more weight.

We do not use superlatives, we do not overgrade, misrepresent,or puff an item up. We grade conservatively since we want you to be pleased when it arrives. This is our commitment to you.

In an attempt to capture the essence of each item, we usea hand-full of simple clear categories. These range from:Fair (or lesser), Good / Good+, near VG to VG,VG+/ near Fine & Fine.

Fair means with some flaws as mentioned. It doesn\'t mean horrible or excellent. Possibly not for gift-giving, but entirely acceptable if the item is uncommon or scarce or you really like it. Many fine institutions around the world own paper items in far worse condition than most of the items we sell.

When we say \"Good\" or \"Good+\", it means basically \"quite OK\" , \"nice\" and in our opinion \"entirely acceptable for most people\" in overall appearance. It does not mean stunningly excellent or virtually like new, nor does it imply lousy, defective, poor, etc. Those lesser conditions are either avoided in acquisition or clearly noted if offered, as are the higher grades.

Very Good to Very Good+ (VG & VG+) mean quite nice. It means thatwe would happily buy this item for our own collection.

\"Near Fine\" is used only sparingly, not thrown around lightly, and means approaching excellent, probably nicer than most other surviving similar examples.Likely the item is notperfect, it likely posseses some minor trivial age-related flaws, or has minor blank margin issues, perhaps some light visible spotting, etc. But when you have it before you, it is clearly worthy of ownership, display, perhaps a museum or an advancedcollection, etc.

These basic condition distinctionshould be understood before you order from us. They reveal much about the item being offered. Please keep them in mind as you are considering any item. Please do not buy an item described as \"Good+ to near VG\" and then complain there are minor splits or age spots in the blank margins.

There are a few buyers who still who act surprised or get upset when they learn many, if not most, old maps offered for sale come from atlases (like Mercator, Ortelius, and most loose old maps do, etc)... or that many old printswere actually first issued within books (which today are now rare, expensive and widely sought after- for instance, Audubon, most 19th century color plate books, etc.). For the record, we never \"break\" fine copies of old books or atlases which are better preserved as objects. Their scarce market position & commensurate high prices do not allow this to occur. Much of our inventoryhas beenacquiredeither loose, in large batches, or from stray defective or poor condition odd volumesover the past28+ years and we remain very active & strong buyers today.

Remember, you can return anything you buy from us without quibble for30 days. How fair is that?

We are a U.S. based internetbusiness. All of our measurements are in inches (not metric). If you need the size in Metric/ Centimeters please multiply the supplied inches measurement by 2.53.
