General Howe Autograph 1777:
One and one half legal folio, General Howe was a BritishGeneral and Commander in Chief of the British Army in America from 1775 to1778. Here, Howe is certifying the receipt of over 19,000 gallons of rum “forthe use of His Majesty’s forces under my Command” It is also signed by DanielWier, the Commissary General for the British forces. The document is in very good condition withoutdetractions, and has normally encountered folds. Paper contains watermark for KingGeorge “GR” and the Royal Seal.
Measures 12 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches. Originally purchased years agoon the Southeby’s online sale website which includes a guaranty as to theauthenticity. Sellor will include the original bill of sale.
As best as I can read, the document says as follows:
“These are to certify the Right Honourable the LordsCommifsioners of his Majesty’s Treasury that John Blackburn Esq of LondonMerchant hath supply’d for the Use of his Majesty’s Land Forces under myCommand and delivered at this Place to his majesty’s Commifsary General ofStores and Provisions one hundred and Eighty puncheons and three half hogsheadsof rum from on board the undermentioned Vefsells viz From the ship Lord NorthGeorge Rof(s) Master one hundred Puncheons containing Eleven thousand and FiftyNine gallons of Rum; From the Schooner Dunmore Daniel Bruce Master EightyPuncheons and three half Hogsheads of Rum containing Eight Thousand Eighthundred and Eighty four and a half Gallons of Rum, The whole amounting toNineteen Thousand Nine hundred and Forty three and a half gallons of Rum fromthe island of Antigua, And I do further certify their Lordships that theaforementioned Rum is of the proper Proof and Strength usual for Rum from thesaid island of Antigua according to Proof made thereof by an Instrument forthat Purpose
I do also further certify their Lordships that no paymenthath been made here to the said John Blackburn Esq for the same for which Ihave signed four Certificates of this Tenor and Date”
