Here\'s an original check written by the famous American soldier, statesman, and academic, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Written on January 4, 1876, the check is drawn on the First National Bank of Brunswick and is made out to Chamberlain\'s also-famous younger brother, Thomas D. Chamberlain, for $50.
The check measures 2.75\" x 7.25\" and has two very faint vertical folds and the obvious coffee stain. At left is a 2-cent revenue stamp and at center is the dated cancellation stamp. Excellent, clear signature at lower right.
Chamberlain, a college professor in Maine at the outbreak of the Civil War, is best known for having commanded the 20th Maine regiment at Gettysburg, where his desperate order for a bayonet charge saved the Union left flank. A Medal of Honor winner for his action at Gettysburg, Chamberlain was a major general by the end of the war. He had the honor of being chosen to accept the surrender of Confederate troops at Appomattox in 1865. Chamberlain\'s postwar career included the presidency of Bowdoin College and four years as governor of Maine.
