James Maurice Gavin [1907 1990]was a prominent general in the United States Army who began his military career in 1924, and was a noted combatcommander during World War II. He commanded the famed 82nd Airborne Division and was referred to as \'\'The Jumping General\'\', because of his practice of taking part in combat drops with his paratroopers. General Gavin was a highly decorated officer andcommandedat Operation Husky, Overlord and Market Garden and retired in 1958, after 34 years of service. Listed for sale is a [TLS] typed letter signedby general James M. Gavin on his personal letterhead and dated March 1, 1961. The letter is addressed to the Executive Secretary of the 82nd Airborne Division Association and reads as follows, Since my appointment as Ambassador to France has been confirmed,I anticipate leaving for Paris about March 10. Will you please change your mailing address from Lt. Gen. James M. Gavin to The Honorable James M. Gavin The American Ambassador Paris, France. The letter is signed \'\'James\'\' in bluefountain pen above his typed name. The letter measures7.25 x 10.25 inches, it has expected mail foldsand a trivial paper clip mark/impressionotherwise itis in fine condition.Theautograph is authentic and the letter is a nice example of this prominent United States Army commander andis ideal for display.
