This is a genuine hand made NEW Shofar from Jerusalem made from a Ram's Horn. A regular Shofar is an instrument made from a ram's horn and a Yemenite Shofar is made from the horn of an antelope. It was blown in ancient times and continues to be blown today during religious services on Rosh Hashana and at the end of Yom Kippur. Some start using the shofar after morning prayers in the month of Elul, the month preceding Rosh Hashana.
A Shofar makes a wonderful gift for a Bar Mitzvah, Wedding, Anniversary, Birthday or any other special occasion.
The Shofar is a natural product and all of them have some nicks, dents or scratches which adds to its natural beauty. The Shofar you see in the photographs above will be the one you will receive. We do not subsitute or choose a replacement. This gives you the opportunity to get an idea of what your shofar will look like.
The sound and tone of the shofar varies based upon the curve, the person blowing it and other variances. All of this is part of its unqiueness. It is usually easier to blow a larger Shofar.
Shofars have a distinctive odor but are fairly easy to clean if the smell is bothersome. My father, who blew the Shofar in Synagogue for many years, used to soak it in vinegar for a while and then let it dry well. There are other methods of cleaning such as using hydrogen peroxide or gravel and alcohol.
