FINE ART ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPH
"GEORGE WASHINGTON, GEORGE WASHINGTON"
ARTIST GEORGE DEEM
This is a superb double-portrait Signed & Numbered Original Lithograph"George Washington, George Washington" by internationally-renowned American Artist George Deem (1932-2008).
The artist, in keeping with Gilbert Stuart's famous painting of President Washington, captures the dignity and strength of character of our first president. Heportrays George Washington, as himself, as he stands in the foreground in front of his own portrait. He presents the president in his portrait, courtesy of Mr. Stuart, hung behind the President. Together, thanks to Mr. Deem, we have President Washington himself together with President Washington inhis famed portrait.
Artist George Deem was best known for portraying the works and images of the Old Masters, especially Jan Vermeer, putting them side-by-side with others from different times. Writer Bruce Weber, in the New York Times, August 19th, 2008, described Artist George Deem as "a painter who admired master painters so much that he spent his own career re-painting their works, albeit with clever alterations….If imitation is a sincere form of flattery, Mr. Deem's admiration of his artistic forebears was carried out on his own canvases. Gifted at reproduction, he concentrated on making explicit references to other painters and other paintings, uncannily recreating the style, the light, the brushstrokes as well as the details of artists he loved."
But Mr. Weber went on to write: "in addition to the explicit references, there were always subtle – or not so subtle – alterations. By leaving out familiar elements or adding elements to known works, or reconfiguring components within them, he made his work a visual commentary on the history of painting, dating to the Renaissance." In fact, Mr. Weber notes that critic Charles Molesworth called Mr. Deem's technique "temporal collage".
Mr. Deem authored two books, "How to Paint a Vermeer: A Painter's History of Art" and "Art School". A reviewer of the latter book commented that it "affirms the richness and variety of the art of painting", and thatMr. Deem's "original vision opens our eyes to the art of seeing". The former book confirms that "George Deem's paintings revise the great masterpieces of Western art with insidious wit and bravura virtuosity". The "George Washington, George Washington" image is shown on page 83 of the "How to Paint a Vermeer" book.
