George Iii Irish Sterling Silver Snuff Box Hallmark Dublin 1802 By Aeneas Ryan:
A fine quality George III solid silver snuff box, with a hinged lid and gilded interior. It is fully hallmarked to the lid and base for Dublin 1802 and the distinctive and unusual AER maker's mark for Aeneas Ryan, a respected and sought after maker, who was active from the late 18th century. I have photographed the box all round and as you can see to one exterior side there are indistinct silver marks, which are well rubbed, commensurate with age and use. There are a couple of small dings and a small, old repair less than 1/4 inch (6 mm), along one side of the bottom edge (please see image). In the right hands this could easily be rectified and is mentioned for accuracy. The snuff box measures 2 1/4 inches long and 1 3/4 inches wide and 3/4 inch deep. It weighs 77 grams. The box has obviously been a treasured and used possession over the years. To the inside of the lid there is mystery script engraving that reads : Pippin 1939 - 1949. Does this relate to a person, or possibly was the box used to hold treats for a dog or horse and then engraved as a keepsake? Whatever it's meaning, the box was still being used almost 150 years after it was made.I hope you can appreciate from the images the superbly engineered hinge of the lid. I can confirm that it opens and closes as it should. All I have done since owning this box is give it a gentle polish. It is wonderfully tactile in the palm of your hand and will make an excellent addition to your collection. Please feel free to ask any questions, or if you require further images I am happy to email them to you. All postage includes Signed For delivery. Thanks for your interest, Amanda.
