Georgian 1759 H'm Sterling Silver Sauce Or Milk Jug By William Kersill Of London:
Superb Georgian Sterling Silver Pear Shape Sauce, Cream or Milk Jug by William Kersill dated 1759
This Early Georgian Sauce, Cream or Milk Jug measuresapproximately 3 3/8 inches or 86 mm across from its handle to the front of its pouring lip by 2 3/8 inches or 60 mm across the width or diameter of its central body from side to side and it stands 4 1/8 inches or 104 mm talltothe topof its handle.
The Jug ismade from sterling silver in an inverted pear shape that stands on a short stem over splayed step and relief decorated circular foot, the jug has a scrolling upper rim with a shaped extending pouring lip and it has a relief decorated scrolling handle on the rear of its body, the outer body of the jug has been wonderfully embossed or raised relief and bright cut engrave decorated with lattice, scrolls, flowers and foliage and it has a stylized shell and scroll decoration around a shaped cartouche on the front that has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below, the front of the upper body under the pouring lip has been impressed with a full set of English sterling silver hallmarksthat readas follows,
W.K - Lion Passant - Crowned Leopard Head - scripted or stylized D
W.K is the London silversmith or makers mark of William Kersill whose mark is recorded as being used from 1757, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver, the Crowned Leopard Head is the Georgian mark of the London assay office and the scripted or stylized letter D is the the date letter for 1759.
Thecondition is used and Excellent for its age.
The Jug has No Large Dents and No Holes that I have found, the jug stands upright, the definition and decoration are very is crisp, the jug holds liquid without leaking, the silver hallmarks are still legible although as the jug is a used antique it does have a split in the edge of its upper rim just behind the pouring lip along with the odd very small shallow dent and it has some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use, it has the patina of age that isto be expectedand a good clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this George II (2nd) Pear Shaped Jug canstill be used today and it would look fantastic in use on a dining table, I also think that it's looks fantastic considering that it's over 250 years old.
This Delightful George II (2nd) Sterling Silver Relief Decorated Pear Shaped Sauce, Cream or Milk Jug by William Kersill of London dated 1759 is one of several pieces of antique and collectable silver that I havealso listed.
