Superb Georgian Sterling Silver Relief Decorated Madeira Wine Bottle or Decanter Label dated 1829
This Antique Bottle or Decanter Labelmeasuresapproximately 4 3/4 inches or 121 mmin length from the base of the label to the top of the chain when it is hanging by just over 2 3/8 inches or 62 mm across thewidth of thelabel from side to side and it is just over 1 1/2 inches or 40 mm deep from the top edge to the bottom edge of the label's body.
The label is made from 22.6 grams of sterlingsilver in a slightlycurved rectangular shape that has a superb rococo style embossed or raised relief stylized shell and scrolled foliate decorated outer border around a shaped central panel that has been pierced with the word MADEIRA,the wine bottle or decanter label has a sterling silver chain hanging from eitherside of the top edge that is long enough to goaround the neck of a bottle or decanterand the label has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or familymonogram all as photographed below, the back of the label hasbeen impressedwith afull set of English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,
C Rover GS - King George Head - Lion Passant - O - Leopard Head
C Rover GS is the London silversmith or makers mark of Charles Reily & George Storer whose mark is recorded as being used from 1828 until 1850, the King George Head is the duty mark of the reigning monarch, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver, the letter O is the date letter for 1829 and the Leopard Head is the mark of the London assay office.
Thecondition is used and near Mint for its age.
TheLabel hasNo Dents, No Splits, No Cracks,NoHoles and No Repairs that I can find, the label is straight, the decoration is very crisp,thesilver hallmark is still clearlylegible althoughas this is a used antique bottle or decanter label it does have some extremely minorsurface marks and wear from use along with the patina of age that isto be expected and a gentle clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antique antique rococo style Madeira wine bottle or decanter label canstill be used today and that itwould make a superb addition to any collection, I also think that it looks absolutely fantasticconsidering that it's almost 185 years old.
