Georgian Sterling Silver Bright Cut & Shell Decorated Tea Caddy Spoon Dated 1826:
Georgian 1826 H'm Sterling Silver Bright Cut & Relief Decorated Tea Caddy Spoon by Ledsam Vale & Co
This Antique Tea Caddy Spoon measures approximately 3 inches or 77 mm in length from the top of the handle to the front edge of the bowl by 1/2 an inch or 13 mm across the widest part of its upper handle from side to side and it is just under 1 5/8 inches or 41 mm across the widest part of its bowl.
The tea caddy spoon is madefrom sterlingsilver with a fiddle pattern or shaped handle that has been delightfully bright cut engrave decorated with stylized foliage within decorative outer borders and this is over a lattice decorated lower handle, the caddy spoon has a wonderfully shaped bowl that has been embossed or raised relief decorated with stylized foliage and berries or balls above a shell shaped main body and the top of the handle has a shaped cartouche that has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below and the backof the handle has been impressed with a full set of English sterlingsilver hallmarks that read as follows,
Lion Passant - King George Head - L&Co - Anchor - C in script
The Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver, the King George Head is the duty mark of the reigning monarch, L&Co is the Birmingham silversmith or makers mark of Ledsam Vale &Co whose mark is recorded as being used from 1818 until 1826, the Anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office and the letter C in script is the date letter for 1826.
The condition is used and Excellent for its age.
The Tea CaddySpoon has No Dents, No Splits, No Cracks and No Holes thatI can find, the caddy spoon is straight, the definition and decoration is very crisp, the silver hallmark is still clearly legible although as the tea caddy spoon is a used antique it does have what looks like a small very old strengthening repair to the left side of the upper bowl that is along the line of the lower handle and it has the odd tiny shallow dent in its bowl that is so small it's hardly worth mentioning, it has some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use along with the patina ofage that is to beexpected and a gentle clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antiquetea caddy spoon can still be used today for loose leaf tea and that it wouldmake a superb addition to any cabinet collection, I also think that it looks fantastic considering thatit's almost 190 years old.
This Delightful Georgian SterlingSilver Bright Cut & ReliefDecorated Tea Caddy Spoon by Ledsam Vale &Co of Birmingham dated 1826 is one of several pieces of antique and collectable that I have alsolisted.
