Georgian Sterling Silver Filigree Needle Case, Ca. 1800 For Sale
Georgian Sterling Silver Filigree Needle Case, ca. 1800
SEE ADDITIONAL PICTURES BELOW
Late eighteenth or early nineteenth century sterling silver filigree two part needle case. Like most English filigree sewing items of this era it is not hallmarked but tests as sterling. A very nice example for its age with only very minimal loss or damage to the filigree work. Approx. 6.6 cm from end to end; weighs 12.1 grams.
This type of filigree work was used on a range of sewing items such as thimbles and novelty compendia - known as 'Birmingham Toys' - which incorporated thimbles, scent bottles, tape measures, pin cushions and seals. It is believed that these items were made in Birmingham by Italian immigrants and their families.
