Late eighteenth or early nineteenth century sterling silver filigree thimble
with vacant oval cartouche. Like most English silver thimbles of this era the it is not
hallmarked but tests as sterling. The thimble is screw threaded so was was most probably part of
what is known as a 'Birmingham Toy' ie. it would have contained a miniature scent bottle and had
a base section which sometimes incorporated a tape measure, pin cushion or letter seal without
all of which your average Georgian gal about town would have felt significantly
ill-equipped.
The vertical seam or join in the rim is visible and slightly undone and
there is some minor loss to the fine filigree work - albeit nothing too tragic. The thimble is
otherwise quite in round and ready to use. Height approx. 2.9 cm; diameter approx. 1.5 cm;
weight 5.1 grams.
