Georgian Sterling Silver Novelty Bull Or Cow Shape Pill Or Snuff Box Dated 1829:
Georgian Sterling Silver Novelty Bull or Cow Shape Pill or Snuff Box from Birmingham dated 1829
This AntiqueNovelty Shape Pill or Snuff 3/8 inches or 61 mm across its total length from the tip of its horn to the back of its body by just under 1 1/4 inches or 31 mm across the widest part of its lower body from side to side and it stands just over 3/4 of an inch or 20 mm tall to the top of its back.
The pill or snuff box is made from sterling silver in the form of a bull or or long horned cow that is laying down and the body has bee embossed or raised relief and engrave decorated to give it its definition, on the underside of its body there is a three section piano hinged click down lid and the box has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below, the rear lower body of the box has been impressed with a full set of English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,
King George Head - GR (upside down) - Lion Passant - Anchor - f in script
the King George head is the duty mark of the reigning monarch, GR (upside down) is possibly the London silversmith or makers mark of George Reid, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver, the Anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office and the letter f in script is the date letter for 1829.
Thecondition is usedand near Mint for its age.
The pill or snuff box hasNoDents, No Splits,No Cracks and No Holes that I can find, the decoration and definition is crisp, the hinge is working perfectly, the lid opens and clickstightly shutwith ease, the box sits straight, the silver hallmarks are partially rubbed or mis struck due to their location but still mostly legible although as this pill or snuff box is a used antique it does have some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use along withthe patinaof age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would notgo amiss. PersonallyI think thatthis is antique novelty shape pill or snuffbox could still be used today and that it would make a superbaddition to any cabinet collection, I also think that it looks absolutely fantastic consideringthatit's almost 185 yearsold.
This Superb Georgian SterlingSilverNovelty Bull or Long Horn Cow Shape Pill or Snuff Box from Birmingham dated 1829 is oneof several pieces of antique and collectable silverthat I have alsolisted.
