Georgian Sterling Silver Sauce, Milk Or Cream Jug From London Dated 1799:
Georgian Sterling Silver Bright Cut Engrave Decorated Cream Milk or Sauce Jug from London dated 1799
ThisGeorgian Cream, Milk or Sauce Jug measures approximately 3 3/4 inches or 95 mm across from the handle to the pouring lip by 2 1/2 inches or 64 mm across the widest part of its central body from side to side and it stands 4 3/8 inches or 112 mm tall to the top of its handle.
The jug is made from 83.7 grams of sterling silver in a slightly bulbous oval shape and it stands on a flat oval base, it has an external raised relief rib or reed decorated upper rim with a shaped pouring lip and it has a raised relief rib decorated handle, the body of the jug has been superbly bright cut engrave decorated with scrolling upper and lower bands that are either side of a floral, scroll and foliate bordered circular shaped cartouche on the front of its body that has been engraved witha previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below, the side of its upper body has been impressed with a full set of English sterlingsilverhallmarks that read as follows,
Possible S H - Lion Passant-Crowned Leopard Head - D - King George Head
S H is very rubbed or worn but it is possibly the London silversmith or makers mark of Solomon Hougham whose mark is recorded as being used from 1792 until 1818, the Lion Passant isthemark of English 925 standard sterlingsilver, the Crowned Leopard Headis the Georgianmarkof the London assay office, the letter D is the date letter for 1799 and the King George Head is the duty mark of the reigning monarch.
Please Note that there are some dark shadows within the images of this jug that are just reflections of the camera or surroundings that could not be avoided during photography.
Thecondition is used and Excellent for its age.
The Jug has No Large Dents, No Splits, No Cracks and No Holes that I can find, the jug standsstraight, the definition and decorationis crisp, the jug holds liquid without leaking, the silverhallmark is still legible although asthe jug is aused antique the makers mark is very rubbed or worn and only partially legible, it has the odd shallow dent around its body along with some minor surface marks and wear from use, it has the patina ofage thatis to beexpectedand a gentle clean would enhance it greatly.Personally I think that this antique jug can still be used on a dining table today for serving cream, milk, gravy or sauces and that it would make a superb addition to any cabinet collection, I also think that it looks fantastic considering that it's almost 215 years old.
