Georgian Sterling Silver Top Clear Cut Glass Mustard Pot From London Dated 1817 For Sale
Georgian 1817 Hm Sterling Silver Top Cut Glass Mustard Pot by S Hougham, S Royes & J E Dix of London
This Antique Mustard or Condiment Pot measures approximately 2 5/8 inches or 67 mm across the length of its lid from side to side by just under 2 inches or 50 mm across the width of its lid from front to back and it stands 4 3/8 inches or 112 mm tall to the top of the finial on its lid when closed.
The mustard pot is made in an oval shape from a clear glass body that has a superb hand cut decoration and it has a sterling silver relief rib decorated mount around its upper rim with a sterling silver dome shaped lid that has a bright cut engraved decorated outer rim with an oval baluster shaped finial on the top, the mustard or condiment pot has Not been engraved with a previous owners initial or family monogram all as photographed below and the upper mount along with the inner lid have been impressed with matching English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,
SH over SR over IED - King George Head -Lion Passant - b
SH over SR over IED is the rare London silversmith ormakers mark of Solomon Hougham, Solomon Royes &John East Dix whose mark is recorded as only being used from 1817 until 1818, the Kind George Head is the duty mark of the reigning monarch, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver and the letter b is the London assay office date letter for 1817.
Thecondition is used and fair for its age.
The Sterling Silver Lid &Mount have No Dents, No Holes, No Splits and No Cracks, the glass body has no large chips and the pot has No Repairs that I can find, the mustard pot stands straight, the definition and decoration is very crisp, the lid opens and closes perfectly with ease, the silverhallmarks are partially rubbed or worn but still legible although as themustard pot is a used antique it does have a small chip in the underside of its base along with a large crack in the side of its body and it has some minor surface marks and wear fromuse, it has the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antique pot can still be used today for mustard, mint or cranberry sauces and that it wouldmake asuperb addition to any cabinet collection, I also think that it has a delightful look about it considering thatit's almost 200 years old.
This Delightful Georgian SterlingSilver Top Cut Glass Mustard or Condiment Pot by SHougham, SRoyes &JEDix of London dated 1817 is one of several pieces of antique and collectable silver thatIhave also listed.
