New old Stock from the attic of an old shop in Eastern Germany. There is a slight patina of age toning on the packs from years in attic storage. Tinsel is bright silver and untarnished. The paper packet is bright colored and shows age toning but no fading. Tinsel was invented in Nuremberg around 1610. Tinsel was originally made from extruded strands of real silver. Because silver tarnishes quickly, other shiny metals were substituted. Tinsel was added to Christmas trees to enhance the flickering of the candles on the tree. Tinsel was used to represent the starry sky over the Nativity scene. By the early 20th century, manufacturing advances allowed aluminum-based tinsel as well as lead tinsel, and Germany produced an enormous amount of Christmas tree tinsel for sale at home and around the world. Production was curtailed during both World Wars as the metal was needed for the war effort. During the 1950s, lead and aluminum tinsel and tinsel garlands were so popular that they frequently were used more than Christmas lights, as tinsel was much less of a fire hazard than candles or electric lights. Both aluminum foil and lead foil were popular material for tinsel manufacture for several decades of the 20th century. Unlike silver, aluminum and lead tinsel did not tarnish (aluminum tinsel never tarnished, lead tinsel age toned slightly but did not tarnish like real silver), so the lead and aluminum tinsel retains its shine.
