German Halberd Polearm From Schloss Marienburg Sword W/provenance $1,000+ Rare For Sale
For sale is an antique16th century style halberd, a polearm used by guards and infantry from the 15th-19th centuries. This halberd was purchased by an affluent American woman and collector back in the 1960s. It was acquired from the famed Schloss Marienburg, a castle located in Hanover Germany. This halberd was purchased sometime in the early 1960s from the castle's collection and was subsequently shipped back to California, where it was displayed in aprivate residenceever since.I purchased the halberd from the family in the 1990s.
The halberd is full length, over 6' tall, and features a very sharp steel blade fastened onto a multi-faceted wood pole which has been coated in a type of black paint (please see pictures). There are several redtassles still attached at the top of the langets. The halberd was orginally cut in half in order to be shipped to the States, and features a wood dowell inserted in the pole so that the two pieces can be fit back together again easily for display. Therefore, shipping this item will be much simpler and less expensive! The halberd is in good condition, with minor surface corrosion to the steel parts as you can see. One side is cleaner than the other side which has some darker corrosion andsurface rust(which probably suggests that it faced the wall during display). It was probably cleaned at one time many years ago and has been well cared for overall. There are decorative langets running down each side with several decorative rivets (three of which are very modern restorations as you can see in the pictures). The wood is in good condition, with some minor scratches and dents, as well as a small area near the half way section, which was repaired with glue many years ago. The halberd would make an great decoration piece and addition to any antique arms collection.
I am told that this halberd probably dates to the 19th century, and was probably intended for either ceremonial or guard use.I will let theexperts judgeits age andoriginal use (please see pictures). The bladeseems to bevery heavy, plain, and sharp suggesting that it was intended for actual defense or use. I sent pictures of this halberd to a few major sale houses several years ago and was told that the value would be anywhere from $800-$1200 in sale. However, in 2004, Sotheby's sale House sold many of the artifacts and other polearmsat the Schloss Marienburg, andI am told that prices for antique arms coming from the Schloss have drastically increased since that time. The schloss Marienburg originally acquired many antique swords, polearms and armors from a variety of armouries and arsenals around Germany in the 1800s, so it is difficult to know from where each item originated. Currently I also have listed a very rare antique 17th century swept hilt rapier which also originated from the same old collection, also acquired from the Schloss Marienburg at the same time. Please check out my other sales.I am listing this halberd at a very low starting pricewith . Iwill let the collectorsdetermine itsfinal value.
