Although world war one was a stalemate in the west, the Germans had success against the Russian Empire on the Eastern front, which resulted in the establishment of the Ober Ost, an administrative area which included Lithuania, parts of Latvia and Belarus. Rubles were issued by the Ostbank für Handel und Gewerbe (East bank for Trade and Commerce) for use in these areas. A further isssue of currency for these areas was made in 1918 in the form of marks. After WWI these notes would continue to circulate in Lithuania until the introduction of the Litas in 1922
