This guitar plays and sounds Exceptional. After 94 years the wood has taken on a rich but still bright tone. The wood appears to be old growth judging by the pattern in the grain. It\'s like playing a piece of history. Gibson really did build them to last a lifetime.
This guitar has had some restoration work. I do not know who did the work or when. We acquired the L3 from an estate sale. The wood has been refinished. The tuners, bridge, nutand tailpiece have been replaced. The tuners have been replaced with Grovers. There are new supports inside the body of the guitar to help keep the guitar rigid to prevent warping and cracking. Whoever did the work did it right. This guitar does not go out of tune. It \"feels\" right. The binding is in great shape. Nothing is coming apart or getting loose. The body and neck are original. The hardware has been changed. This Gibson L3 can be used as a daily player. It is not museum quality. It is a \"players\" guitar.
Serial number is #49759. Gibson decoder says \"1919 Kalamazoo plant\".
Cosmetically: Even though it has been refinished, there are still some cosmetic issues. Nothing too objectionable. After all it is a 94 year old piece of history. Cracks: There is an 18\" long crack from top to bottom in the back of the guitar. Appears to be in the finish. The luthier supports inside do cover it up in the interior body. The crack is not going anywhere. There is a smaller 5\" crack running parallel to the larger one. (See picture #4). Those are the most noticeable items. There are many small finish cracks on both front and back of the body. Minor scratches, nothing offensive. Neck and frets are in really good shape. Plenty of life there. There are strumming scratches around the top of the sound hole. This Gibson has all the mojo, good looks, great sound that it should have. It has been very well taken care of.
This L3 has all the Mojo and than some. Definetly a \"Players Guitar.\" This is the model of guitar that blues legend Robert Johnson played. It is really unique and has a cool vibe to it. The case isin really good shape.I only hope that I personally look this good if I make it to 94 years old. The sound of this guitar is awesome. If you always wanted to take a trip to the \"Crossroads\", here\'s your ticket.
