It is marked 2 over S in a shield and 50. The shaft is ebony, very heavy and hard, but is not original to the head. When I purchased the Head over 30 years ago the head was on a broken shaft. This shaft fits the head perfectly and is from the same period, and same type as the original. I wish I had a story on how it was broken, as John Mercer Langston was a friend of Charles Sumner one of the most famous canings in history.

In any case for those who don’t know who Langston was, I refer to Wikipedia, as his story is too long to tell here. He was a famous educator, activist, diplomat, and politician perhaps the most famous except for Frederick Douglass. His story is a must read if you are interested in the law school at Howard University, or Virginia State University, Oberlin College, Haiti, etc.

He was elected to the US Congress in 1888; during the campaign many Langston Clubs were formed including those formed for females. The head is engraved “ J M Langston from First (American Flag) Ward Female Langston Club 1888” This is the year he was elected and presumably the club was in the First Ward of Petersburg, VA. A bit under 35 inches long.
