This dress is truly stunning and unique! It comes from an amazing collection of historical dresses and was stored perfectly.A one of a kind custom-made find, most likely French.

The material flows beautifully creating a slim and very elegant silhouette. (We believe the material to be silk, but there is no label)

The design is both stylish and ingenious with overlapping panels of wrap-around draped and beaded silk.

The bodice is composed of two layers, one layer being of a light beige mesh-like fabric that was meant to serve as under garment which closes with hooks. The outer layer of the bodice is made of silk and is adorned with silvery/grayish beads as well as black jet beads around the collarless neckline. It closes with snaps.

The skirt also consists of two layers, both made of silk. The layers are only loosely connected at two points on the sides. They close with hooks and snaps. The outer layer in wrap-around style is adorned with gorgeous hand sewn beaded embroidery in intricate Art Deco/Art Nouveau patterns. There is an attached belt with very pretty, light blue tassels.

The sleeves are also embroidered with beads and have beautiful fabric covered buttons. The buttons do not actually have a function, they were added as adornments. There are 14 buttons on each sleeve - a total of 28 of these incredible silk-covered buttons!

Color: a beautiful medium shade of blue.

Measurements, laid flat, approximately:

Shoulder to shoulder: 13”

Length of bodice from shoulder to waist: 12 ½”

Chest: 17” laid flat, inner layer.

Waist: 12”

Skirt: length from waist to hem: 32”

Hips: 22”laid flat

Sleeve length: 20 ½”

Sleeve width:8” on top;

5” at wrist

Total length of dress: approx. 44”

Condition: Overall in very good condition for its age but there are some imperfections consistent with age, e.g. faint discoloration in some areas, some minor repairs, e.g. on the left sleeve, a tiny hole on the right sleeve that could easily be mended, and on the back of the skirt, there is an area with a few storage stains (see pictures). They are not noticeable at first glance and look more like shadows and I have not tried to remove them. One side seam of a wrap-around part looks to be hand sewn at a later time (see photo 10, with layer held outward). There may be minor age-related flaws that I did not notice even though I have tried to be very thorough in my descriptions.

Generally, all antique fabrics are considered somewhat fragile and should be handled with care, especially when opening snaps – never tear on the fabric, just separate the snaps with your fingernails instead in order to avoid tears.

No big holes, rips, or tears.

No missing buttons, beading intact.

Dress is clean, no odor, comes from a smoke-free and pet-free home.

This dress represents the epitome of elegance and luxury of the Roaring Twenties in the best tradition of Parisian chic. The perfect outfit for celebrating the new season of Downton Abbey in style!

It could still be worn today and would look as stylish and elegant as ever or would make a stunning display piece. It would also be interesting for fashion design to study the unique cut. Very rare find with all details from this era intact and truly a piece worth being the centerpiece of a dress collection!
