Grand Antique English Silver Plated Spirit Kettle By Thomas Prime C.1860:
A quite spectacular large spirit kettle, a wonderful with six panels running around the body of the kettle and intricate and exquisite engraved decoration and the lid topped with a finial in the form of a towering floral bouquet. The back panel retains an original decorative engraved monogram. The stand is supported by the most elegant splayed legs leading up to an exceptional "skirt", again beautifully decorated. The kettle is secured with the use of two "keys" one releases the back of the kettle so that it could pivot on the front hinge to pour while still on the stand. The key to the front can also be released removing the kettle completely. There is a burner below which would have been filled with fuel to light the wick, keeping the water hot and ready to top-up the teapot. The handle folds and has two Ivory insulators to keep the handle cool. The underside has a full mark for the silversmith, Thomas Prime, established in 1818 producing EPNS wears from 1844 to 1894, this piece I would place at around 1860. Exceptional quality and condition, a really impressive piece standing 17 1/2" tall to top of upright handle and spanning around 10" from spout to widest point.
