Grand Prize Medal Louisiana Purchase Expo (& Olympic Games) 1904 St Louis Cased For Sale
Grand Prize Medal Louisiana Purchase Expo (& Olympic Games) 1904 St Louis cased
Grand PrizeMedal (in itscase of issue) from theLouisiana PurchaseExhibition / World's Fairheld in St Louis in 1904, which was notable among other things for including the 3rd Modern Olympic Games. I would judge this medal to be in very fine (VF)condition or better, but please take a good look at my photos and form your own opinion. The case is in reasonable condition for its age: it is coming apart on the outside at the hinge, but is still held together here bya strip ofmaterial below the surface.
Made from Bronze, Maximum Width66 mm, MaximumHeight74 mm, Weight approx 150 grams, Mintage 3,300. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman (who later designed the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and Mercury Dime), as one of his earliest commissions for a struck medal. The engravings and medals were struck by the U.S. mint in Philadelphia. This is the rarest of five medals designed by Weinman for the Fair, the others being the Gold, Silver, Bronze and Commemorativeawards. These are some of the most popular and collectable of all exposition medals. They are interesting because of their unique shapes and design, the unique material they are made of, and 5 levels of medals awarded. The exposition itself was popular too and because it included the Olympic Games these medals are sometimes collected by collectors of Olympic Participation Medals (the official 1904 OPM is extremely rare and prohibitively expensive for many).
Shipping is by tracked and fully insuredmail (Royal Mail International Signed-For, or Special Delivery in the UK). All my medals are guaranteed genuine.
