Grand Tour Bronze "borghese Gladiator" Statue:
BRONZE SCULPTURE OF "FIGHTING WARRIOR" AFTER THE ANTIQUE
Unsigned, probably French
Known somewhat erroneously as the "Borghese Gladiator", this fine bronze sculpture features what the Louvre refers to as "The Fighting Warrior". The work is characterized by exquisite casting quality and is mounted on a marble base that is now an extinct marble (I do not know the name of the marble but was informed it is so). The original sculpture is made of marble and dates from around 100 B.C. The sculpture was originally found at Anzio, south of Rome, before 1611 among the ruins of Nero's palace.Extensive literature has been produced regarding the work and a wonderful synopsis is available by the Louvre regarding the history of the original work. The present example showcases the figure beautifully.
This sculpture is from an immaculate, smoke free/pet free home and I live alone. It has been in mypossession for 20 years.
