Great Early Northern Plains Gunstock War Club With Original Drops, Exc Example For Sale
Straight out of a private collection in South Dakota....Early Plains Gunstock War Club With Extensive Decoration and Original Feather Drops. This is truly a beautiful work of art and shows extremely well with incredible patina. I'm not a pro at this, but would date this just about turn of the century or possibly earlier. I'm not an expertand you be the judge. The extensive work to the haft from tacking to hide and even the beaded stitch is remarkable. What is also impressive, as well as unusual (to me at least), is the double steel spikes. The way they are anchored truly had me stumped. After showing to a local well known collector here in New England...it is believed that the spiked blades are in placed by a inner welled spaced filled with what appears to be lead or similar material. They are both firmly in place and aren't going anywhere soon. The spikes show some rusty discoloration but still in great shape. Even the rest of the decor is in place with no loose pieces. It certainly shows some handling wear but certainly is classified as pure patina. The feathers are showing some wear but still show well. The Club measures a little over 32 inches long. The drops are about 12-13 inches long and the spike are 2 1/2 inches long.Remarkable find. All antiques such as this are sold as is and due to age show expected wear and may have blemishes, inclusions, scratches...expected of the period. As always, low starting price & !
