Group Of French Provencal Santon Figurines:
This group of Santon figurines, consisting of 5 standing figurines, 1 seated figurine, and 2 figurines sharing a bench, were bought new, both in Chicago and France, and have been in my sole possession for about 30 years. The Santons (or little saints) are small, about 10"-101/2" tall for the standing figures and about 8" for the seated ones, hand painted terra-cotta nativity scene figurines. They were produced in the Provence region of France and they represent various characters from Provencal village life. I believe all the figures in this set are from the same producer. The clothing fabrics are similar, as well as the lace trim on the women's clothing and bonnets. I have enjoyed using them as centerpieces for French themed dinner parties and decorative elements in my home. All the figures on a round base are either stamped "Made in France" and two have the addition orange seal "Syndicat Des Santonniers de Provence and Veritable Santon d'Argile." The two figures on the bench and the fisherman on the chair have no stamping, as there is no flat surface to place a stamp. Printed and blue striped cotton, red corduroy, and lace are the principle textiles used for the this group of Santons.
