VICTORIA CROSS

Introduced as the premier award for gallantry, available for all ranks, to cover all actions since the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1854. A cross pattee. On the obverse a lion statant gardant on the royal crown, with the words FOR VALOUR on a semi-circular scroll. The Cross is suspended by a ring from a seriffed 'V' attached to a suspension bar decorated with laurel leaves. Crimson ribbon.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER

The DSO was instituted on 6 September 1886 by Queen Victoria in a Royal Warrant published in the London Gazette on 9 November. It is typically awarded to offericers ranked Major (or its equivalent) or higher, but the honour has sometimes been awarded to especially valorous junior officers. Ribbon is crimson with dark blue edges.

DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS

Established for officers and warrant officers of the R.A.F. in respect of acts of valour while flying in active operations against the enemy. A cross flory terminating with a rose, surmounted by another cross made of propellor blades charged in the centre with a roundel within a laurel wreath. The horizontal arms bear wings and the crowned R.A.F. monogram at the centre. The cross is suspended from a bar decorated with a sprig of laurel. Ribbon has diagonal alternative stripes of white and deep purple.

1939 - 1945 STAR
