Hamilton 951, Hunting Case, 16s, Lever Set, 23 Jewels, Original Gold Case For Sale
This is an extremely rare American pocket watch. Hamilton 951, hunting case, lever set, 16 size & 23 jewels. Original 14kt gold case.A gift from a father to his son. The dedication reads: "Edgar R. Dodge, from father, August 14, 1903".
The case is initialed: R & F 14kt. R & F were Boston case makers. The case fits like a glove & obviously is the original one. The case screws marks align perfectly.
The watch has been recently overhauled by a competent watchmaker. The movement is highly damascened. It's bright, clean & runs well. the watch provides excellent time.
I have offered many pictures of the areas I feel would be important to a collector. The Montgomery/Canadian enamel dial is superb. I looked at it with magnification & could not see any unsightly damage. (I did not place it underthe microscope). In real life & forknowledgeable collectors, this dial would classify asexcellent. It has 4 feettomount itto the movement. ( A rare feature in American watches.) I wastold by the watchmaker that 2 of the 4 screws attaching the dial to the movement are missing. The remaining 2 provide good support & I am sure the next owner could find replacements. I ammentioning that to be complete in my description. It's not a visible featureand should not affect the value of the watch in one way or another.
The gold case is plain, Spartan. It has the usual wear (pocket wear) seen on gold watch cases which have been carried around. Gold is a soft metal and in 2 monthsthis watchwill be110 years old. The case could of coursebe buffed to mirror likeperfection but that wouldalso bebuffingthe charm of the watch.
This Hamilton would be the queen, thecenterpiece of any watchcollection. Interested parties are welcome toget in touch if they want toinspect the watch. Of courseit would have to be handled carefully. If the successful buyer choosesto pick up the watch in person, that could alsobe arranged with prior notice. Otherwise the watch will be shipped by registered mail to the winning buyer. Two Hamilton 951have appeared on the market over the past 7 years. Neither was in such a pristine condition. There were dials and movement flaws with questions of recasing. Both brought a great deal of money, much more than the reserve I have chosen to apply on this unique watch.
We have no doubt this watch will makethe next ownervery happy.
