Offered for your consideration today is this fantastic piece of early to mid-19th Century English blown glass or glass whimsey. This particular piece is a cobalt blue rolling pin painted with the image of a ship with the word Perseverance beneath it. According to Wikipedia, the British Navy had 3 ships by the name of HMS Perseverance, the first of which was commissioned in 1781, and the last of which came out of service in 1854. My understanding is that these blown glass rolling pins were a token of fidelity and a kind of talisman made or, more often, purchased by sailors to remind a girl of her fiance or husband sailing on the high seas. They were often decorated with portraits of ships and rhymes. Indeed, the cartouche to the left of the ship appears to read: Eliza H. I cannot read the name in the cartouche to the right of the ship -- as you can see, there is wear to the painted decorations and names on the rolling pin, commensurate with age and use, but presumably, it includes the sailor\'s name? In any event, I am sure you will agree that this is a lovely and highly collectible piece of maritime folk art or glass whimsey. It measures approximately 14.5\" across and is ready for display in your home or office. Thanks for looking.
