FANTASTIC, ORIGINAL CIRCA 1790 AMERICAN MANUSCRIPT HYMNAL. This terrific late18th century volume was penned by Massachusetts native Samuel Lesure (1762-1825). Treatise was likely penned by Lesure whilein his late 20s or early 30s. Lesure was born in Uxbridge, Worcester County, and died in Warwick, Franklin County, spending his entire life in Massachusetts. We were fortunate enough to acquire this wonderful piece from the estate of a direct descendant in Franklin County.
This is one of those rare gems that should be seen to be fully appreciated. Entire contents--song titles, lyrics and sheet music--painstakingly applied by hand with ink remaining bold and legible throughout. Volume retains its original leather cover as well. This is far by the earliest American manuscript hymnal we have ever offered. A magnificent and well preserved early artifact ofAmerican music.
Condition: Rare book remains in goodto faircondition [see images]. Oblong shaped volume bound in originallimp calf [leather]; cover worn and dried, some toning and discoloration, edge wear with a bit of tearing, one leaf clipped along loweredge,scattered spotting,occasional ink bleeding,a fewdog-eared corners,etc., generally clean internally. Volume contains 32 pages and measures approx 4" tall x 8" long. Quite a find and a very worthy acquisition indeed.
