Handwritten Astronomy Book Manuscript Science/ethics/philosophy/theology 1643:
FANTASTIC, ORIGINAL 17TH CENTURY MANUSCRIPT BOOK. This early handwritten volume is dated 1643 and contains 109 pages of neatly penned material covering an array of compelling subjects. Among topics receiving detailed attention include ethics, philosophy, morality, theology, and astronomy. Text written on laid paper, organized into two main sections andneatly executed throughout in dark brown ink, andbound in contemporary limp goatskin. Both sections bearpostscript initialling, presumably that of author. This is one of those rare early gems which should be seen to be fully appreciated. A striking feature of this early continental bound manuscript is the title page, which bears an engraved rectangular border by noted Italian engraver and printer Lodovico Grignani (1586-1651). Inside engraved border lies a blank inner compartment, suggesting volume was originally sold as a pre-bound blank book. Inscribed within blank compartment is book's presumed title, "Prooemium in Libros Ethicorum". Printer's information embedded within lower central portion of engraving. Another notable feature of this early manuscript volume is the secondseparately titlesection, comprising some 32 pages of text or nearly a fullthird of book's entire content. This section is dedicated largely to the subject of astronomy, namely meteors and comets. Given book's early date, this is an especially intriguing discussion of these topics. To put it in context, Galileo and Kepler were among pioneering astronomers making major discoveries during the first half of the 17th century, or atabout the same this earlymanuscript was penned. Condition: Rare book remains in good to very good condition [see images]. Volume bound in contemporary limp goatskin [leather], likely original; small tear to center portion of spine, partially rubbed out manuscript date of 1643 to spine, occasional ink smudging, pages hand-numbered in laterpencil to 123, numbered on every other page andinterspersed with some blank sections. In total, book contains 109 pages of handwritten text in Latin; and measures approx 7.75" tall x 5.5" wide x .5" thick. Quite a find and a very worthy acquisition indeed.
