Handwritten Diary/1925-27/young Man Crazy School Teacherhallowell, kennebec,me. For Sale
I am happy to offer you today a diary that I truely enjoyed reading! It is the diary of a young 18 year old school teacher named Grace Blake from Hallowell Maine, and begins on Oct.20,1925 and ends on Feb.21,1927.Grace was a wonderful and faithfull writer. Her days entries would usually begin with something like,"Diary Dear","or "My Own Dear Diary",and she would pour her heart into every word, with emotional long entries! This is such a fun, interesting read, because you can see the changes in Grace as she writes. In the beginning she is a fickle, man crazy young lady, dating all kinds of guys, sometimes using them and making them think they were the only one,and hoping that each wouldnt find out about the other. All the while, teaching school and furthering her own education. She would think she had found the man of her dreams until the next good looking man came along, and then she would want to be with him,but didnt want to give up the other guy.She knew it was wrong, but just couldnt help herself. She is always on the go,going to all kinds of dances,(she is quite the dancer),and dates, and off with friends, and school of course, always coming home and writing all the details in her faithful diary. As the diary progresses she grows into a much more mature young lady. She was also quite involved with her church, apparently a good singer and music teacher. She eventually meets a guy,who she likes but she doesnt feel the same way about him that he does her,but he has a car,and lets her drive it and will do anything in the world for her.He absolutely loves her and is terribly jealous of any other man that comes around. She wants to tell him that she doesnt love him,but she just cant do it.She knows she will never find anyone else that will be as good to her as he is,and so she eventually even agrees to marry him,but is still torn and has an eye for others. The difference in her back in the beginning of the diary, and when she hooks up with this fellow is she has an eye for other guys, but she doesnt act on it.According to the Census information I found that she and he did get married,in August of 1927,shortly after she stopped writing in this diary. She lived to be 92 years old and died in 1999.This is a fantastic diary and look back at a girls life in the 20's.The diary itself is very large. It was written on notebook paper and the entries are long. The outer cover is missing completely, but the pages are all in order and in tact. There is some minor discoloration of the pages due to age,and some of the outer edges of the pages are a bit frayed and fragile, but none of this interferes with the writing and being a teacher it is very nice and easy to read. There are a total of 130 notebook pages, and she has totally filled in each page with writing!A few entry examples are..."Boy what a marvelous evening!I cant wait to tell you about it.Worked today for Tibb while he went up to the Colby Maine game.Perhaps I wouldnt have liked to have seen it,but the two bucks came in handy.Bill was in to see me -hes going to N.Car. next week.Oh Dear!Well therill be others I suppose.Ding came in at eight thirty, and wanted me to go to Union so I did tho I wasnt dressed for it and hadnt planned on going. But Boy!Who should I see on stepping thru the door but my sweetheart Bud!!"...."Most honorable Diary--Whadda ya no!!I managed after many fruitless attempts in the past,to get to "Y" tonight. But not such a thrilling time. They're having a minstrel show in the B.P.W. and they asked me to participate, but when I heard -"rehearse every night for two weeks",I politely declined.Billly was up there.I sat around with him most of the time. Then he went down to the car with me.Bah-nothing stirring for excitement tonight."..."Dearest Diary- Oh boy!A letter from Bud!!I went into exports of ectasey(sp..??),upon receipt of same.Maybe you think I wasnt thrilled-it seemed so good. But,and here is where the rub comes,it was simply a friendly letter, not at all like the impassioned episttes that George reels off-as if he meant it."...Please keep in mind this is just a tee tiny sample of her entries and doesnt even begin to get into all she writes about.Any questions please feel free to ask me anytime and thank you so much for looking!!
