His greatest work waspublished in 1849 with the title: "The Illuminated Books Of the Middle Ages; an Account Of the Development And Progress Of The Art Of Illumination, As A Distinct Branch Of Pictorial Ornamentation From the IVth To XVIIIth Centuries"illustrated by Owen Jones."In this listingwe are presenting an original handwritten manuscript from Henry Noel Humphreys with illuminated initials, etc. This folio contains seven leaves,[14 pages]with four small original hand colored Medieval era illustrations to include: Specimen of an early Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Hibernian manuscript similar to a page from the Gospels Of Moel Brigid Mac Durnan, Abbott of Derry and Bishop Of Armagh circa 925. A representation of St. John writing his Gospel, circa 15th Century. Two line-fill illuminations, and a hand colored letter with knot work. The illustrations areon separate pages of the handwritten manuscript and they are tipped in.Rare folio has 14 pages [7 leaves]penned by the the coloring of some of the original hand coloredexamples of illuminated artwork contained in his book. Whether this was a proofing of the initial printing of the bookis not known. It would appear there were more pages to this folio and they were taken apart at some time in the past to retain pieces of the illuminated artwork. Some of the text in this handwritten manuscriptis almost exactlythe same as the text of the published book. Humphreys, who studied medieval manuscripts in Italy as a young man, became an accomplished scholar in numerous subjects. In addition to his entomological texts, Humphreys wrote works on ancient Greek and Roman coins, archaeology, and the art of writing and printing. This is quite a rare find; an original handwritten manuscript with four small original hand colored illuminatedillustrations that are just stunning.Condition: Seven leaves, disbound in a folio, 8" x 12 1/4" and all in very good condition,is Humphrey's critique of the book that he was writing but quite possibly not yet published.
