Hannibal Hamlin - Signature(s) 06/18/1889 For Sale
HANNIBAL HAMLIN Card signed and dated by Hannibal Hamlin, Abraham Lincoln's first vice president, in 1889. Framed to 9¼x11¼ in a brown wood frame with a b/w engraving of Hamlin. Card signed "Hannibal Hamlin/Bangor Me./June 18 1889". 2½x1¼ card framed to 9¼x11¼ in a brown wood frame with a beige matte and a 4x6¼ b/w engraving of Hannibal Hamlin. Abraham Lincoln had never met Hamlin (1809-1891, born in Paris Hill, Maine), his vice presidential candidate, until after the election on November 6, 1860. The President-elect invited the Vice President-elect to meet him in Chicago, where they exchanged pleasantries, complimenting each other on speeches each made in the House of Representatives. At the Republican National Convention held on June 7 to June 8, 1864, Democrat Andrew Johnson, Military Governor of Tennessee, was nominated to be Lincoln's Vice President, replacing Hamlin. It was believed that the presence on the ticket of a Southern Democrat who supported the war would help unify the nation. On February 12, 1865, what was to be Lincoln's last birthday, Vice President Hamlin, as President of the Senate, declared Lincoln reelected President and Johnson elected the new Vice President by 212 to 21 electoral votes. Hamlin returned to his Maine home, serving as U.S. Senator (1869-1881) and U.S. Minister to Spain (1881-1882). Not framed in Gallery of History style. Items not inspected outside of frame.
