The Associate Justice of the Supreme Court responds to a woman in Texas, he sends her an autograph and a Christmas card for her daughter's scrapbook.
Typed Letter Signed: "Harold H. Burton" as Associate Justice, 1 page, 5¾x9. Washington, D.C., 1953 March 16. On letterhead of the Supreme Court of the United States, Chambers of Justice Harold H. Burton, addressed to Mrs. John T. Willis, Forestburg, Texas. In full: "My dear Mrs. Willis: Replying to your letter of March 10, I am glad to send to you for your daughter's scrapbook my autograph and, as a personal memento, one of the Christmas cards [Not Included] containing a message which I wrote. Mrs. Burton and I used these cards for Christmas, 1951. Cordially yours," Harold H. Burton (1888-1964) was Mayor of Cleveland (1931-1932, 1935-1940) and Republican Senator from Ohio (1941-1945). Appointed by President Harry Truman, Burton served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1945 to 1958. A liberal on civil rights issues, Burton joined several decisions against racial segregation. He was more conservative on civil liberties questions, voting to uphold loyalty oaths and to deny First Amendment claims by Communist Party members. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
