Kawase Hasui Original Superior Rare Woodblock Print Tenno Ji Temple Circa 1927

SUPERIOR RARE KAWASE HASUI ORIGINAL WOODBLOCK PRINT TENNO JI TEMPLE CIRCA 1927

We have the privilege of offering you this superior and rare Kawase Hasui, Tenno-Ji Temple, real woodblock print with relief in the washi from pressing.
Circa 1927.
Highly superior quality in lines, shading and having stronger colors than most woodblocks of this series that have been sold.
We were told it was purchased in 1931 at a gallery in Yokohama, as the back is marked, Hasui Yokohama 1931, in pencil by the framer, Haley & Steele Art Dealers in Boston, Massachusetts.
Measures Oban, size, 10" tall by 15" wide without the frame and 20 11/13" tall by 14 7/8" wide with the frame.
On the bottom left just outside of this beautiful print, you will find the title and date and on the bottom right of the print you will see his signature, Hasui and seal, Sui, 1927.
From Columbuscat Evaluations, (after sending them numerous photos with every detail of this woodblock): "Given the prestine condition and high quality of colour and sharpness of lines of the woodblock print this is a very scarce and much sought after item. One of Hasui's best images. It is from the series "Tabi Miyage Dai Sanshu" - {Souvenirs of my travels, third series), signed Hasui and sealed, published by Watanabe. It dates from 1927. A leading specialist dealer would ask in the region of an appraised value of $6,000.00 for this" woodblock.
Kawase Hasui was born May 18th, 1883 and passed away at the age of 74 on November 7th, 1957. He is known as one of three of the greatest woodblock print artists of Japan, stated by Narazaki Muneshige in the 1950's. Of the Shin Hanga movement, Kawase Hasui is known as one of the great masters of landscape prints. His art work was declared a Living National Treasure by the Japanese Government in 1956. The night scene prints and designs showing snowfall or rain are his most famous. Kawase's sketches were made on the spot and he spent most of his life traveling, so he could capture live scenic views. Up until his passing, he created more than 600 prints. The last print he created was "Hall of the Golden Hue, Hiraizumi", which was finished in 1957. Kawase was battling cancer at the time and while he was hospitalized he was still supervising the early process of production, but was unable to see the final print. Watanabe Shozaburo, Kawase's lifelong publisher, distributed the last print to friends and acquaintances of the artist at the occasion of a memorial service for Kawase Hasui on March 6th, 1958.
We have only found a few of these prints sold and none have the strong cut lines in color that this print has. The details of the rafters and corbels are true and clear, as well as the snowflakes. Others we have viewed on the Internet, have more muted colors and fewer background snowflakes than this outstanding print. Please note the shade toning in the roof, the detail is so good you can also pick up the printers scrub marks in the solid colors.
A top end edition to any true collector of Japanese art.
We are starting this beautiful woodblock print by Kawase Hasui at what we consider a low wholesale price, thank you.

In regard to furniture and accessories, we sell antique furniture and accessories. As most people know, these pieces become more beautiful with age because of movements and distress in the woods, some having restoration. Spindle turnings will not be uniform and swell unevenly with age. Wood tends to get stress fractures on support systems and where wide board construction is used. 85% of 18th Century veneers have had some restoration during their life. Pine secondary woods might fracture, making overlays and veneers have the same fracture lines. Old finishes might alligator, fade, fisheye or darken, depending on where the pieces were placed. All of these are desired by a true collector and gives it personality. Do not expect these early pieces to be like new. These pieces age gracefully just as we do, giving them unique personality. We do our best to describe and photograph all items thoroughly, but handle a quantity of pieces every day and might miss something. All these antique pieces are sold as is. It is your responsibility to view the photos, review the description, if you wish photos of a specific area on any piece we are happy to promptly submit them to you and ask any questions you may have before offerding. Selling items, untouched, usually directly from estates, we are not experts on clock works or any items with mechanical or moving parts. We know if they tick, run, move and are in tune with the quality of sound, but offer no guarantees on these items.
