Heavy Antique Victorian Silver Plated Tea Set, Army & Navy Co-op Society, C1890:
An attractive antique Victorian silver plated three piece tea set of half reeded rectangular form, comprising a creamer, sugar and tea pot. The quality is superb with gilding still present to the inside of the creamer and sugar. The teapot has an ebony handle and finial.
This set was made circa 1890 by the Army and Navy Co-operative Society, and bears their earlier style of mark - which is Warranted Hard Soldered, a heavier gauge of silver plate. Each piece also bears the model number 833.
The Army and Navy Co-operative Society Ltd was established in 1871 by a group of army and navy officers. It was intended to supply 'articles of domestic consumption and general use to its members at the lowest prices’. The first store opened on 15 February 1872 at Victoria Street, London. At the end of 1873 a gun department was established. In 1934 the company's official name became the Army and Navy Store Ltd and in 1973 Army and Navy Stores was taken over by House of Fraser.
