HIDDEN Ghost MOTHER in Shroud & Girl- Post Mortem? Photograph FULL PLATE TINTYPE

Here is aEerie C1870 FULL PLATE Ferrotype of a HIDDEN (or Ghost) MOTHER with her two young daughters (presumably).This first child is standing and the second child sits upon a wicker pedestal. To the rightashrouded figure supports the sitting child.

If you look closely at the photo details, you can just make out two fingers of her right hand just beneath the child's right arm.This setting naturally begs the question: Is this aPost Mortem photograph?

I think yes for a few reasons. First, the seated child simply does not look animate to me and her standing sister wears a countenance that could best be described as something between fear and sorrow.

This largefull plate tintype measures 7" X5 1/8" in size. The image was purchased in Wilmington, NC at the Coast Line Convention Center Antique Show just a few weeks ago. It is likely that this is a Wilmington family image.

As you note, the condition remains first rate. Well preserved by all standards, I can observe only the most minute flaws and evidence of agingpresent.
