Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served as Captain in the 25th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment before being mustered out in July 1861. Later, as a Colonel, he gathered and trained troops in Doylestown, Pennsylvania for the 104th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. While stationed in Washington DC, he took command of two other brigades. His 104th suffered heavy losses at the Battle of Fair Oaks outside Richmond. Later in the war, his regiment hunkered down in swampy islands on the South Carolina coast and lobbed shells at Confederate held Charleston and intercepted communications for the still rebel-occupied Fort Sumter. By the close of the war, Davis' right hand was blown off by shrapnel, and he was promoted to Brigadier General. Davis supported Lincoln's postwar policy of reconciliation towards the South and helped raise funds for one of the earliest Civil War monuments. In 1880, Davis established the Bucks County Pennsylvania Historical Society and served as the leading historian for the county for the rest of his life.

2. 104TH PENNSYLVANIA REGIMENT:

The 104th served in the Peninsula Campaign outside of Richmond, suffering 237 casualities at the Battle of Fair Oaks. The regiment was transferred south where it served in the Siege of Charleston, fighting at such places as Fort Wagner. The author, colonel of the regiment, began writing this history during the Charleston campaign, resulting in "a highly reliable commentary on the Peninsular and Carolina coastal campaigns," according to "Civil War Books, A Critical Bibliography". On the 21st of August, 1861, W. W. H. Davis, a citizen of Doylestown, Bucks county, who had been a soldier in the Mexican war, and served as Captain in the Twenty-fifth Regiment, three months' service, received authority to recruit a regiment of infantry, and a six gun battery. Recruiting was immediately commenced, and a camp of rendezvous and instruction established near Doylestown. To hasten the work, public meetings were held, at one of which, at Addisville, six thousand persons were estimated to have been present, and addresses were made by William D. Kelly, Lewis C. Cassiday, Esq., Rev. Jacob Bellville, and George Lear, Esq.

On the 6th of September the first company was mustered into service, and in the first week in November the regiment was reported for duty with eleven hundred and thirty-five officers and men. With the exception of one company, nearly the entire regiment was recruited in Bucks county. The following were the field officers:

  • W. W. H. Davis, Colonel
  • John W. Neilds, Lieutenant Colonel
  • John M. Gries, Major
