Hk1 1826 Erie Canal 82mm English Version Vf-xf Tiny Dig, Nice Silvery-grey Bosco

The rare large-size version by the English medalist Thomason. Much scarcer than the actual, dollar-sized HK1. In white metal, as usual, altho seen in bronze maybe 25% of the time.

There is a very tiny dig near the edge (5:30) on the "mythological" side, and at about 12:30 there iss samll dig that is probablyan abandoned attempt tomake a hole. The sharpness is fully XF by US grading, but I lower the grade to VF-XF due to scatterd light surface marks. The vulnerable esdges are almost perfect. The color is a pleasant grey, swathed over vestigial mint luster. (The photo is slightly "washed out" andunderplays the nice coloring.)

Estimate: $500-ish, but:

.

This very piece was included in theexhibit at the Museum of American Finance, 2001, for the official NY State celebration of the 175th Aniversary. The museum, now at 40 Wall Street, is pretty much an obligatory visit for numismatists, stockbrokers and investors.. Admission is a modest $8,I believe.

AND SPEAKING OF MUSEUMS...I recently did an appraisal of the "numismatic" collection at the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen, founded 1785 and located at approximately the exact center of the universe, 44th Street in Manhattan, between 5th and 6th Aves. On display is their copy of HK1, given to them at the 1826 ceremony, in its original wood case and in as fine condition as I can imagine. A couple hundred other items, extremely interesting, with exceptional political badges and ribbons, are also displayed. The disposition of theassemblage was under conderation, but their board, to its great credit, decided the material keepsakes of a long history were worth more than a few bucks. The building itself is a magnificent "gilded era" structure --available for meetings and societal gatherings-- and there is a library. They have a website, of course.
