Eastern Mediterranean with Cyprus, the Middle East, Sinai and the northern part of Egypt. Beautifully engraved to show the topography (much of which is fanciful) and to illustrate incidents in the lives of several saints. Most interestingly the map is filled with dragons, serpents, crocodiles, lions, camels and elephants. It also depicts monasteries and hermits living in the desert solitude. This large map is printed on two joined sheets and is oriented with north in the upper right corner by a fine compass rose.

Condition: Very strong and dark impression on good paper. Paper with chains and wiremark. Map old original colored. Short margin ti the top. Short lower margin. Small right lateral margin. Quite left lateral mergin. Corners partially missing. Paper browned. Small tears and holes reoaired. Map washed and restored. Map folded. Conditions are as you can see in the images.
Mapmaker: Stephen Michalet or Michallet (1630? -1699) has been a printer-librarian active in Paris and, from 1687, first printer ordinary of the King.
Native of Lyon, son of a mason-architect; brother-in-law (1661) of the librarian of Lyon Adam Demen; apprentice bookseller in Lyon (May 1650) before practicing there (1658) and coming to Paris in 1663 (then 33 years old). Apprenticeship in Paris from January 1664 to 1668. In 1668 came up against the refusal of the syndic of the community of booksellers and printers Paris to admit to the master. He established himself on his own in Paris in 1669. Received another apprentice in Lyon in May 1670 (?). Writes a catalog in association with the Parisian bookseller Michel Le Petit from 1671. First editions known in 1670-1671. Officially admitted into the community on 27 Oct. 1676 under an order of the lieutenant general of police of Paris of July 24, 1676. Would have bought the funds of Michel Le Petit and Florentin Lambert. Gendre (Jan. 1679) of the engraver and prints dealer Pierre Landry; said at age 48 at the time of his marriage (Jan. 1679), and at the age of 69 at his death (Sep. 30, 1699), according to his widow's statement in the Nov.-Dec. 1701. His widow resells his funds and equipment to Jean-Baptiste-Alexandre Delespine (May 1700 and 1702) and remarries in September 1702.
