Here is a FINE example of a c1940 (1930-1950) authentic and well made HOPI Zuni Rain Priest From The North KACHINA which is in excellent condition for age - see pics! This Kachina was made by an expert Hopi maker - Hopituh Sinumu!

This is a fine looking Kachina, with a quality paint job and expert carving. He is made from solid Cottonwood Tree Wood, standing 10 1/2" tall, and about 3 1/2" wide at shoulders. There is some very minor wear as expected from age/use(minor wear/paint/feather loss/stains) - yet in Excellent to near Mint Conditionoverall (no cracks or breaks) and displays very well! Note the fine paint job (original paints / not restored) and classic "stiff arm" pose.

The Kachinas are spirits who live in the San Francisco Peaks (an "extinct" volcano) near Flagstaff, Arizona, they come down at certain times of the year to interact in their various forms with the Hopi People on the three ancient Mesa Pueblos. You can visit the Hopi Mesas to see them dance in their human form, there is even a hotel there now - see the Hopi This is an Hopi Kachina emulating the ZUNI RAIN PRIEST From the NORTH and specifically a HOPI SAIASTASANA KACHINA. This Kachina is an import / borrowed from the nearby Zuni Pueblo no in New Mexico. This priest typically accompanies the SHALAKO Kachinas. The Saiastasana Kachina will be present at the Pamuya Dances this January / First Mesa. This is a Classic and RARE Hopi Kachina worth investing in. This Kachina is an excellent example of a well made and classic Rain Priest - not many of these around and difficult to obtain! It is not a new or contemporary Kachina made in the old style but a Kachina made around 1940 emulating the even older Zuni Rain Priest Kachinas (once you have this item in hand and can inspect/analyze the paints, patina and carving style you will clearly see the age to this style="font-weight: normal; ">The body is carved from a single piece of the traditional Cottonwood - a tree that grows in washes and canyons where water is more carved and painted by a master Hopi Kachina carver/maker (c1940) - a true and classic Kachina.
