Here is c1950 authentic and well made HOPI DEER/ANTELOPE KACHINA which is in excellent condition for age - see pics! This Kachina was made by an expert Hopi maker and is stamped on the bottom (looks like Sun Symbol Clan stamp), there is also an eligible faded signature.
This is a fine looking Kachina, with a quality paint job and expert carving. He is made from solid Cottonwood Tree Wood, standing a BIG 15" tall (not including the feather), and about 6" wide at fists. There is some wear as expected from age/use(expected wear/paint/feather loss) - yet in ExcellentConditionoverall (a crack at one shoulder which you can see in pics) and displays very well (stands on its own)! Note the fine yet laborious detail (horns, paint job, carving, etc.), the Germantown Yarns on wrists and side of head, and the 50's era accoutrements-all original (see pics).
The Kachinas are spirits who live in the San Francisco Peaks (an "extinct" volcano) near Flagstaff, Arizona, they come down at certain times of the year to interact in their various forms with the Hopi People on the three ancient Mesa Pueblos. You can visit the Hopi Mesas to see them dance in their human form, there is even a hotel there now - see the Hopi This is an older c1950 (1940-1960) Hopi Kachina, and specifically a CHOP-SOWI-ING KACHINA. These Kachina dances for all the herbivorous animals and helps bring the rain so the spring grasses grow well. This Kachina is an excellent example of a well made and classic 1950's Era Hopi Cottonwood Carving! style="font-weight: normal; ">The body is carved from a single piece of the traditional Cottonwood - a tree that grows in washes and canyons where water is more carved and painted by a master Hopi Kachina carver/maker (Sun Symbol Clan) - a true and classic Kachina.
Excellent condition for age and a true VINTAGE Collector's item!!!!
