Huge ~ Aesthetic Sterling Silver Lorgnette Opera Glasses Antique Victorian Bugs:
Up for sale is an extremely rare, sterling silver Aesthetic period lorgnette made by fine American silver maker, Whiting circa 1880. The handles are incredibly beautiful featuring an applied leaf and beetle on one side, and a fly on the other side. The top portion of the sterling is decorated with very stylized flowers and leaves. The detail and design is really fantastic, and these types of lorgnettes are very hard to come by. It is quite possibly one of a kind!!
The lorgnette is large and measures 8" long and 4 1/2" wide with the lenses extended. Thelorgnette is clearly marked "Sterling" with the Whiting hallmark, and the serial number 883. The handle of the lorgnette is in overall excellent condition with just a few very small dings that are not very noticeable. The top portion of the sterling that houses the lenses has a slight bend in the sterling, which can be seen in the pictures. The lenses themselves are in fairly good condition with no cracks or holes. There are some surface scratches and one small chip on the side of one of the lenses. The slight imperfections could easily be repaired by an experienced estate jeweler.
This lorgnette is an ultra rare, very special piece that would be a great piece to use or to add to a collection. It is truly stunning.
