Huge 41" Tall Exhibited Eastern Pende Mask Gallery Figure - No Reserve For SaleHuge Eastern Pende mask. Beautifully carved, raffia intact. Portions of my (200+) collection were exhibited at a university gallery in 2009 and you can see this mask in the photo of the installation. The last photos show items I am or will be selling soon. 100% positive response. You will not be disappointed. "Of the three masks belonging to the chiefly regalia, of the Eastern Pende people, Pumbu is deemed the most dangerous and is reserved for
only the most powerful chiefs. The Pumbu mask represents the part of the executive branch that must deal with war and execution. The Pumbu,
unlike the majority of other mask, is only danced on special occasions such as, when the chief is seriously ill, in times of illness or famine, when
other issues are causing disruption in the community or when the chief feels threatened. Through the dancing of the Pumbu the chief asserts his
authority. The interlacing diamond patterns of the mask are symbols of chiefship and royalty. The large wide opened eyes of the mask, showing lots of
white conveys anger. The beared teeth of the mask symbolize the fierce power of the chief and the ears sticking out from the sides of the mask
mean that the chief hears everything that goes on and knows all. The overall aesthetics of the mask are meant to evoke fear, this idea is even
more evident in the performance of this mask." - University of Virginia ( wont allow me to add the link)
Height: 42" (107cm) Not including raffia
Width: 10" (not including raffia)
Depth: 12" (not including raffia)Provenance: some of my items have solid provenance, others like this do not. I will never make a claim a specific age or tribal usage unless I have iron-clad documentation (and as we all know even that can be false). Have you noticed some sellers here who have sold over 4000 items and have listed them all as "early 20th century?" I acquired this several years ago from an estate sale- I have no other information. It is an outstanding example of African craftsmanship and artistry.
Additional Information: My entire collection has been frozen to -30 for at least one week to eradicate any possibility of insect activity. this is of particular concern for items with hair or feathers (as in this case). This is a technique given to me by an archivist from the major African museum in Washington DC. When your collection is 300 plus you can't take any chances of introducing moths or termites. Domestic and international shipping is the actual cost as calculated by 's shipping calculator. If the amount seems wrong, it probably is. Please feel free to contact me. I just added a photo with a human (not me - I wish I were that young again). As you can see the mask is large, as is the Baga and Shrine figure.
