HUGE LOS CASTILLO VTG TAXCO MEXICO MEXICAN STERLING 980 SILVER AMETHYST NECKLACE
Description

This is an EXTRAORDINARY silver necklace that was hand wrought in Taxco, Mexico, circa 1940 to 1945, by world renowned silver maestros at LOS CASTILLO. Maestro Don Antonio Castillo began his illustrious career working with the "Father of Mexican Silver", Maestro William Spratling, at Taller de Las Delicias. In 1939, he left Spratling and opened LOS CASTILLO, with his brothers and his wife at the time, Margot van Voorhies Carr (aka Margot de Taxco) ~ they later divorced. This spectacular necklace is masterfully crafted in a feminine and dramatic motif that has a wonderful art nouveau look. It is made of 980 silver which is almost PURE silver and is superior to sterling silver 925. The necklace has a LARGE central pendant (3-1/8" long and 2-7/8" wide) ~ the center is adorned with a gorgeous oval purple amethyst cabochon (1-3/8" long and 7/8" wide) that is in a raised bezel setting and surrounded with an ornate framework of silver scrolls and swirls with cincel decorative accents. The pendant may have started its life as a fur clip since it has hinged double pins on the back. The pendant is permanently attached to a heavy hand wrought silver chain. The chain is comprised of rectangular silver links that connect with oblong silver links that are part of the design. The clasp is the original locking clasp. I do not know if the chain is original since I am not the original owner but the chain connections on the back of the central pendant do look original and not a newer addition. This may have been a custom piece (the original owner could have purchased the fur clip and had Los Castillo add the chain) as I have never seen another one like it in my over 40 years of collecting. The recesses of the design are oxidized which lends depth and dimension. This necklace is extremely well made in a sophisticated and timeless design by silver maestros, LOS CASTILLO ~ an art-to-wear treasure that will be one of your all-time favorites to be worn and cherished ~ it is collector, heirloom and museum quality ~ quite simply ~ THE BEST!!!

SIZE: Inside circumference when closed is 25", width at central pendant is 3-1/8", width of links is 3/8", and weight is 130 grams.

CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition ~ no dings/dents to the silverwork ~ no chips, cracks, or damage to amethyst cabochon only naturally occuring inclusions and color variances inherent to Mexican amethysts ~ minor scratches due to loving wear and age ~ just about PERFECT used condition!

HALLMARKS: "980, LOS CASTILLO, TAXCO, 256 (design number), MADE INMEXICO" which is one of their EARLIEST hallmarks! LOS CASTILLO is shown on pages 99-105 of Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition). Mr. Hougart indicates that Los Castillo used this linear mark from 1940 until 1945.

PLEASE NOTE: For Mexican jewelry artists and designers, silver is their canvas. In their hands, craft meets creativity and silver becomes wearable art. The various techniques are like a painter’s brushstrokes ~ they make each piece unique and a timeless object of beauty. Mexican vintage silver jewelry is handwrought, and therefore, not perfect ~ each piece will have variances that indicate that the piece is hand made. Vintage pieces will show various signs of wear since they have been pre-loved ~ items are described to the best of my ability and any damage will be noted.
