Huge Marcello Fantoni Ceramic Mid-century Vase Italy:
For sale is a massive ceramic vase by well respected master ceramicist Marcello Fantoni. This was produced at his studio in Italy during the 1960's. It has a wonderful decoration and form that show off a number of his difficult ceramic techniques. The area of decoration is a smooth and shiny glaze, painted and incised with a knife to draw the figures and flowers. The sides and back are finished in a really complex volcanic glaze similar to the work of Fantoni's contemporary, Guido Gambone. This piece measures 19 3/4" tall (!) by 4 1/2" wide. It is signed twice: one time on the bottom and another in the lower left hand corner of the painted and incised design. The overall condition is nice and the piece displays beautifully. Upon very close inspection there are a few fleabite sized nicks in the part that has the decoration and shiny glaze. These are towards the edges of the design and may be a product of the process rather than being actual damage. At the top of the neck just below the curve there appears to be a fine firing crack that was covered up while the piece was in production. To my eye (the the eye of my partner) this appears to have not happened after the piece was made because there would have been some other associated damage in the nearby area.
