This sale is for a stunning and one off example of a highly pyritised multi ammonite fossilcontaining the species Crucilobiceras densinodulum from the world famous Jurassic Coast beach of Charmouth, Dorset UK.

The fossil measures an enormous 89mm (31/2inches)by 60mm (2 3/8inches)which is about as big as this fossil type gets and itcontainsdozens ofammonites spread overboth sideswhich have a wonderful colour and shine; distinctive of fossils of this type from this location. This is one of the very largest multi ammonite pyrite fossils I have ever found and is truly unique. It is unusual as thecentral matrix is composed oflimestone rather than just pyrite. They are all beautifullypreserved with incredible detail in the ribbing. This one is another wonderful fossil which I\'ll be sad to see leave my collection;as good asthis fossil type gets.

It is a classic example of a multi ammonite death assemblage; many ammonites which met their end together and came to rest on the sea floor becoming preserved in this interesting fashion. Around 195 million years old, this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.

Pyrite is a form of iron which sometimes occurs as a replacement mineral during the fossilisation process, depending on conditions in the sediment at the time in which the process takes place as well as the composition of the creature being preserved. It has the appearence of gold which is why it is commonly known as \'fool\'s gold\'. Pyrite ammonites only occur in very specific and limited locations around the world and ones from Charmouth are just about the most famous of the lot.
